The centrepiece of Bohdan Khmelnytsky gallery is the triptych called “We are Bohdan” by the artist Andriy Yukhimets. The paintings depict Bohdan at the Zaporozhian Sich (a semi-autonomous Cossack region), Bohdan among the colonels and the meeting with the clergy in Kyiv.

Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s heraldic flag shows his family coat of arms. The flag was donated to the Museum by Vasyl Basargin, head of the Kremenchuk branch of the «Association of Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Heirs»). The coat of arms indicates that B. Khmelnytsky came from Abdank (Syrokomla) branch of Ukrainian nobility.

Bohdan Khmelnytsky was born on 27th December 1595. He entered the historical arena as highly educated and battle-hardened sotnyk (centurion, a leader of a hundred) of Registered Cossacks. He fought Turks and Tatars, and his first victorious battles at Zhovti Vody and at Korsun added significant impetus to the powerful nationwide uprising that engulfed the whole Ukraine. The liberation war of the Ukrainian People (1648-1654) was led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky and came to be known as “The Khmelnytsky Uprising”, it was the turning point in Ukrainian History.

During the war, the rule of The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita) in Ukraine was overthrown and a Ukrainian Cossack state (Cossack Hetmanate) was established. A big and remarkable event for our people during the hetmancy of Bohdan Khmelnytsky was the Treaty of Zboriv. In the exposition this event is represented by the title page of the Cossack Registry of the year 1649. It is produced in bright colours and decorated with Bohdan Khmelnytsky coat of arms. The latest edition of this book is kept in the museum’s library and a lot of visitors look for their names in it with interest.

The gallery exhibition is enriched with the pictures of a well-known Ukrainian graphic artist Oleksandr Danchenko “Before reprisal”, “Ukrainian immigrants on the Russian border” (given by the artist’s family). The composition by “The Stamp of Ukraine” – a series of portraits of hetmans by the artist Yuriy Logvyn and block of stamps “Hetman regalia and personal effects of Bohdan Khmelnytsky” by a well-known artist Vasyl Vasylenko. Among the other paintings that are in the gallery an honourable place is taken by a series of portraits of hetmans of the Ruin period. There are the portraits of Yuriy Khmelnytsky, Ivan Vyhovsky, Ivan Briukhovetsky, Pavlo Teteria, Petro Doroshenko, Demian Mnohohrishny, Ivan Samoylovych (made in colour by the artist Sergiy Lutsak). The information about all the hetmans is well represented in our museum’s library.
